  3. intuitively understandable that 
  4. disorientation and black-white 
  5. reversal interfere with 
  6. spontaneous recognition in 
  7. this example, it is by no means 
  8. easy to explain why they 
  9. should do so. After all, because 
  10. we are viewing a two-
  11. dimensional object in the 
  12. frontal plane, the correct 
  13. outline of Europe is present on 
  14. the retina. Nevertheless, the 
  15. correct shape is not initially 
  16. perceived, and for this reason 
  17. it is not recognized.

  19.     The image that appears on the 
  20. retina is simply an optical 
  21. matter, merely the beginning of 
  22. a chain of events that leads to a 
  23. percept and, generally, to 
  24. recognition of the thing 
  25. perceived. In order for us to 
  26. perceive a world of 
  27. differentiated shapes, some 
  28. internal process must 
  29. construct them from the neural 
  30. energy that emanates from the 
  31. millions of rods and cones in 
  32. the retina and that is 
  33. transmitted along the hundreds 
  34. of thousands of fibers in the 
  35. optic nerve. In this chapter, I 
  36. will explore what principles 
  37. the mind uses to impose an 
  38. organization on the mosaic of 
  39. visual stimuli and what role 
  40. experience plays in the 
  41. perception of shape.
